

BSL Teaching Assistant
Communication is at the heart of every child’s learning journey – and for some pupils, the right support can be life-changing.
A specialist SEN school in Sunderland is seeking a BSL Teaching Assistant to support pupils aged 5–16 with hearing impairments, Autism Spectrum Condition and communication needs.
The school has a strong focus on inclusive communication, ensuring every pupil has access to learning through British Sign Language (BSL), visual strategies and structured teaching approaches.
Location: Sunderland
Hours: 8:30am – 4:00pm | Term Time Only
The Role
You will support pupils across the school day by:
• Using BSL to support communication in lessons
• Supporting pupils during structured classroom activities
• Helping pupils develop confidence in communication and social interaction
• Working alongside teachers and speech & language specialists
• Supporting pupils with additional needs such as autism and sensory processing difficulties
What We Are Looking For
• BSL Level 2 or above (preferred)
• Passion for supporting young people in education
• Patience, empathy and strong communication skills
• Willingness to learn and develop within SEN education

All pay rates quoted will be inclusive of 12.07% statutory holiday pay. This advert is for a temporary position. In some cases, the option to make this role permanent may become available at a later date.
