Consultant Systems Engineer

About the Opportunity
Our client is a specialist engineering consultancy delivering high-quality professional services to UK and international clients across transport, infrastructure, and natural resource sectors. As a growing consultancy, they offer a collaborative environment where engineers work directly with clients, tackle real-world engineering challenges, and play a key role in delivering complex programmes. Their culture is built around technical excellence, pragmatism, continuous learning, and trusted client relationships. This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced Systems Engineer to join a highly regarded team supporting major infrastructure projects across the UK and beyond.

The Role
We are seeking a Consultant Systems Engineer with strong experience in Systems Engineering and Requirements Management to support the delivery of complex infrastructure and transportation programmes.
This role is ideally suited to an engineer with 5+ years' experience who enjoys solving challenging engineering problems, working closely with clients, and applying structured Systems Engineering methodologies throughout the project lifecycle.

While Systems Engineering experience from a variety of industries will be considered, experience within the UK rail sector is highly desirable and will be a significant advantage, given the current project portfolio.
You will work alongside experienced Chartered Engineers and recognised Systems Engineering specialists, gaining exposure to nationally significant programmes while continuing to develop your technical expertise and consultancy capabilities.

Key Responsibilities
-    Apply Systems Engineering principles across the full project lifecycle, from concept and requirements definition through to integration, verification, validation, and acceptance.
-    Develop, manage, and maintain structured, traceable requirements at system and subsystem levels.
-    Manage requirements change, impact assessments, baseline control, and end-to-end traceability.
-    Support Verification & Validation (V&V) planning, compliance activities, evidence management, and engineering assurance processes.
-    Contribute to Systems Integration and Interface Management activities across multidisciplinary engineering teams.
-    Review technical documentation, engineering outputs, and compliance evidence to ensure quality and alignment with project requirements.
-    Work directly within client delivery teams, integrating with established governance frameworks, processes, and engineering standards.
-    Facilitate workshops, technical reviews, and stakeholder engagements across project teams.
-    Support the development of Systems Engineering Management Plans (SEMPs), strategies, governance frameworks, and technical documentation.
-    Manage and deliver technical work packages with minimal supervision, ensuring high-quality outputs and timely delivery.
-    Build strong and trusted client relationships through technical excellence, collaboration, and professional consultancy.
-    Mentor and support less experienced engineers where appropriate, contributing to team development and knowledge sharing.

About You
You are a proactive and technically capable Systems Engineer who enjoys working on complex, multidisciplinary programmes. You combine strong analytical thinking with a practical, delivery-focused approach and are comfortable operating within client-facing environments.
You thrive in collaborative teams, communicate effectively with stakeholders at all levels, and take ownership of delivering high-quality engineering solutions.

Essential Requirements
-    Degree qualified in Engineering, Systems Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
-    Typically 5+ years' experience within Systems Engineering or complex engineering project environments.
-    Strong experience applying Systems Engineering principles throughout the engineering lifecycle.
-    Proven Requirements Management experience, including requirements development, traceability, verification, validation, and change management.
-    Experience producing and reviewing structured engineering documentation and technical deliverables.
-    Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with a pragmatic approach to delivery.
-    Strong written and verbal communication skills.
-    Experience working effectively within multidisciplinary engineering teams.
-    Ability to engage confidently with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
-    Comfortable working directly with clients in a consultancy or project delivery environment.
-    Ability to manage competing priorities while maintaining high standards of quality and professionalism.
-    Membership of, or interest in joining, a recognised professional body such as IfSE, INCOSE, or a relevant engineering institution.

Highly Desirable
-    Previous Systems Engineering experience within the UK rail industry.
-    Experience supporting major rail programmes or railway system delivery projects.
-    Familiarity with rail industry standards, governance, and assurance requirements.
Desirable Skills & Experience
-    Experience working within rail, transportation, infrastructure, defence, aerospace, or other complex engineering sectors.
-    Experience using requirements management tools such as IBM DOORS, DOORS Next, or equivalent platforms.
-    Knowledge of Systems Integration, Interface Management, Engineering Assurance, or Safety Assurance activities.
-    Experience within a consultancy or client-facing delivery environment.
-    Working towards or holding Chartered Engineer (CEng) status.

What's on Offer
This is an opportunity to join a respected specialist consultancy working on nationally and internationally significant infrastructure programmes.
You will have the chance to take ownership of meaningful work from day one, working alongside recognised industry experts while continuing to develop both your technical and consulting capabilities.
The role offers exposure to a broad range of projects and clients, creating excellent opportunities for career progression, professional development, and industry recognition.

You'll benefit from:
-    Direct involvement in high-profile infrastructure and transportation programmes.
-    Collaboration with experienced Chartered Engineers and Systems Engineering specialists.
-    A supportive and knowledge-sharing culture.
-    Ongoing mentoring, professional development, and career progression opportunities.
